The aim of this article is to identify traditional and new factors influencing the development opportunities of 4 major cities of Middle Pomerania through the analysis of socioeconomic and financial functions for the years 1989-2016. The article sets forth the key historical and contemporary factors influencing the development of Koszalin, Słupsk, Kołobrzeg Szczecinek and points a historical and contemporary transformation of the function of these cities. The result of this analysis is to determine the development potential and advantages of each of the four functional urban centres with an indication of their chances and risks for their further operation. An important element of the study is to compare the scale of reported commuting to work (data 2011), the level of unemployment (April 2016, Mai 2017), and to estimate the functioning of the labour market and the scale of commuting to work by 2025. Analysing the problems of its investments, changes in the number of jobs, the scale of commuting and development potential, some frames of the development have been indicated for four urban centres of the potential Middle Pomerania Voivodeship with an indication of their current and future socio-economic and financial potential. The article contains indications for the development of the specialisation functions and potential administrative functions of each of the four cities in Middle Pomerania.
